PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT
As part of East Sussex Arts Partnership's Word County programme, LLL is currently developing a project focused on the parish of Plumpton, located within the South Downs National Park between Lewes and Ditchling. LLL's Artistic Director, Mark Hewitt, will be talking to people that live and work in the village with a view to finding those soundbites that capture the relationship between people and place, and that complement the insights uncovered by the village's hidden histories group
These messages will be typographically set by Peter Chasseaud of the Tom Paine Printing Press to become handmade posters that will be displayed in key locations in Plumpton and in the surrounding area to coincide with the village’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The techniques employed to make the posters will be much the same as those used by the artists and craftspeople that worked in nearby Ditchling in the early 20th century, amongst them, Eric Gill, printer Hilary Pepler and calligrapher Edward Johnston, who designed the lettering used for the London Underground, used to this day.
